sportster primary chain adjustment

Adjusting the primary chain on a Harley-Davidson Sportster is an important maintenance task that should be performed regularly to ensure smooth operation of the motorcycle's primary drive. Here are the general steps to adjust the primary chain:

  1. Start by putting the motorcycle on a level surface and securing it on a motorcycle stand.
  2. Remove the primary chain inspection cover on the left side of the motorcycle using a socket wrench.
  3. Rotate the motorcycle's rear wheel and check the chain tension by pressing the chain up and down at the midpoint of the lower run. The chain should have 5/8 to 7/8 inch (16-22 mm) of free play.
  4. If the chain tension is too loose, use a socket wrench to loosen the rear axle nut and slide the rear wheel forward until the chain has the correct tension. If the chain tension is too tight, loosen the rear axle nut and slide the rear wheel back until the chain has the correct tension.
  5. Once the chain has the correct tension, tighten the rear axle nut to the manufacturer's torque specifications.
  6. Reinstall the primary chain inspection cover and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's torque specifications.

It's important to consult your owner's manual for specific torque specifications and any additional steps required for your particular Sportster model. It's also recommended to inspect the primary chain for wear and damage while adjusting it and replace it if necessary.
