Performing a primary oil change on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle involves draining and replacing the oil in the primary chaincase, which is responsible for transferring power from the engine to the transmission. Here are the general steps to follow:

  1. Warm up the motorcycle by running the engine for a few minutes. This helps to make the oil flow more easily.

  2. Locate the primary drain plug on the bottom of the chaincase. Use a socket wrench to remove the plug and drain the old oil into a drain pan.

  3. Clean the drain plug with a rag and inspect it for any signs of damage or wear. Replace the plug if necessary.

  4. Remove the derby cover from the primary chaincase using a screwdriver. This will allow air to flow in and help the oil to drain more completely.

  5. Remove the oil filter from the chaincase using an oil filter wrench.

  6. Install a new oil filter onto the chaincase, tightening it by hand until it is snug.

  7. Pour fresh primary oil into the chaincase through the derby cover opening, using a funnel to avoid spilling. Refer to your owner's manual for the recommended oil type and capacity.

  8. Reinstall the derby cover and tighten the screws to the torque specification listed in the manual.

  9. Finally, reinstall the drain plug and tighten it to the recommended torque setting.

Once the oil change is complete, start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to circulate the new oil. Check the oil level using the dipstick or sight glass, and add more oil if necessary. Finally, dispose of the old oil properly by taking it to a recycling center or mechanic who can dispose of it safely.
